INTRODUCTION
A normal human body is able to live disease-free for 120 years or more if it is properly cared for. Many people maintain their car in immaculate condition, making sure that it gets the right fuel and lubrication, and ensuring that it is serviced and cleaned regularly, but fail to look after their own bodies to anything like the same extent. They then wonder why they suffer painful and debilitating diseases and poor health from middle age onwards. They spend more time researching what brand of car to buy than they spend researching how to look after their bodies.
No fad diets are promoted in this book – only good sensible nutrition. You need to choose foods that provide the cells of your body with the nutrients that they need, avoid foods that contaminate your body, and take a few sensible precautions to protect your body from other health- destroying activities. To do this you do not need to become a vegetarian, in fact this can lead to more problems than it solves if not properly managed. Some vegetarian diets give good results, but this book caters for those average meat-eating people who would like to understand in simple terms how to improve their health.
In simple terms, there are two completely different types of diseases -infectious diseases, which are caused by living organisms, and chronic degenerative diseases which result from a physical breakdown of the cells that make up the structure of our bodies. We can also be attacked by various parasites such as worms and flukes.
Our bodies have an immune system designed to fight off infectious diseases, and modern western medicine has developed various forms of immunisation, which prevent many of these diseases striking. Antibiotics have also been developed to fight bacterial infections (but not viral ones) after they have struck. There are some additional precautions we can take to lessen the chance of contracting infectious diseases, such as maintaining cleanliness (and dare I say it, avoiding hospitals), but there is still an element of luck about who contracts infectious diseases and who does not.
Over seventy different names have been given to the chronic degenerati diseases, depending on which part of the body has been damag and the nature of the damage. These include cancer, leukaemia, hea disease, stroke, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, arthritis, rheumation osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Crohn’s, coeliac disease, macula degeneration, and dozens more. It is important to realise that our bodies have been designed to fight off these chronic degenerative disease They are all generally preventable and, even after being diagnosed, o still be greatly alleviated if appropriate measures are taken to give our bodies the environment they need to heal themselves. Our bodies have an amazing ability to repair themselves if they are given a chance to do so. Aging is natural but chronic illness and persistent pain are not.
A human body is composed of over 100 trillion cells that routinely die and are replaced by new cells. Some cells last only 24 hours, others last up to 12 months before dying and being replaced. If all of the cells at any particular time are healthy, the whole body is healthy. Various nutrients have to be available for healthy cells to form. Once formed, the cells can be damaged by ‘free radicals’, which are oxygen atoms that are missing an electron in the outer shell. As electrons are stolen from other atoms, a chain reaction is set up and a process known as oxidation occurs.
Oxygen is the most abundant substance on earth. It is essential to support life but it is also destructive. We see its damaging effects when it reacts with steel in the presence of moisture to form rust, or reacts with food causing it to deteriorate. Oxidation causes an apple to turn brown when it is cut. If lemon juice is put on the apple it does not go brown. That is because lemon juice is an antioxidant – it prevents oxidation. This explains why you need plenty of antioxidants to prevent oxidation occurring within your body. It has now been realised that most chronic degenerative diseases are triggered by these free radicals. Free radicals can be cancelled out by ‘anti-oxidants’, which, by definition, are substances that prevent oxidation.
To maintain our health, the solution is simple. We need to:
- Supply the cells of our bodies with all the nutrients that they need to form properly, at the same time avoiding foods that damage them;
. Make sure that we do not poison our cells by ingesting toxins or poisons through our skin, our lungs or our stomachs;
. Clean up our bodies and get rid of, or nullify the effects of, the poisons that have previously accumulated in our bodies (this is known as detoxing);
• Get rid of any undesirable parasites that are attacking our bodies; and
. Attend to other lifestyle issues that may be increasing our chances of developing one or more of the chronic diseases.
In the process, we should seek out and consult a range of health professionals who can help us in our quest. Do not rely on any one profession for guidance or treatment, as no one has the expertise to cover all areas relating to health. Anyone who tries may confuse you with technical jargon that could be hiding their lack of knowledge on aspects of health unfamiliar to them. They all have something different to contribute, and you should work out for yourself who is giving you the best advice to suit the particular circumstances. All recognised methods of treatment have their fair share of successes, but no one method of treatment is always successful. For example, if you are having problems with your eyes, do not assume that only an optometrist or ophthalmologist can help you. Maybe a chiropractor can solve the problem. If you are having problems with your hip, do not assume that only a doctor or orthopaedic surgeon can help. Maybe a podiatrist can solve the problem. If you have a chronic degenerative disease, do not assume that only a doctor can help. Maybe a naturopath can find the cause of the problem and solve it. If you suffer from chronic depression, do not assume that a psychiatrist is necessarily the right person to help. Maybe a dentist who is a member of the Australasian Oral Medicine and Toxicology Society can solve the problem. And so on.
Whatever you decide to do about your own health, at least teach your children all these principles so that they will have a chance of a disease- free life. Old habits become ingrained, but if children are taught these things from an early age they will be far more accepting of them later in life. Every school health and physical education program should teach the principles espoused in this book. Many of the health problems that have become common among children may improve or clear up if you follow these recommendations.
With modern computer technology, it is now possible for competent and knowledgeable professionals to test and analyse the complete biochemistry of a particular individual and prescribe an exact method of treatment to correct that person’s biochemistry if it is not normal. Many health professionals seem to be unaware of the existence of this technology at the present time. Do not hesitate to use the Internet yourself in an attempt to learn more about managing your own health.

good. Recent studies have shown an increase in cancer rates among those taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. These drugs affect the biosynthesis of Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10). This is needed by the heart to produce energy so a CoQ-10 supplement, which is a recommended supplement for everyone in general, is essential for anyone who does take these drugs.such as mercury and lead have been passed on to you in the wo But just because your parents ended up with a particular disease not mean you must end up with it too. Free radicals are the trig that set off practically all chronic degenerative diseases. Elimin the free radicals, prevent acidity, give the cells of your body nutrients they need and minimize the toxins entering your body, an the chances of your contracting any of these diseases is substant reduced, whether your parents had them or not.
This book gives lay people, who are unfamiliar with scientific terminology, 101 ideas for preventing and alleviating chronic degenerative disease. These recommendations will also boost your immune system, which will help you to resist the infectious diseases. The explanation accompanying each recommendation is deliberately kept short and has been greatly simplified so that busy people who are not interested in the detail will be more likely to take the time to read it. However, for each recommendation a book reference and/or website address are provided so that readers can refer to these for professional scientific or medical advice if they wish to obtain further information. The books listed in the bibliography are a representative sample of current literature. They contain the latest thinking in scientific and medical circles by scientists and doctors who are generally acknowledged as leaders in their fields. Copies of these books can be bought through your local bookstore or health food store or through the Internet.
Some of the recommendations in this book conflict with popular opinion. If you disagree with anything in this book, or wish to investigate further consult the appropriate books referred to, or check out the websites listed. Full details are available there.
The author is not a health professional, but has had personal experience with most of the recommendations in this book and has not included. anything that he is not convinced is accurate if the instructions are properly followed. He has been researching the subject for over ten years
As you scan through it, tick the suggestions that are already a part of your life. If you do not yet have a debilitating disease the number of ticks may give you a rough indication of the number of years you can expect to live a disease-free life. For example, if you tick 80 or more (including some of the really important ones like not smoking and getting plenty of exercise) then you can expect to live a relatively disease-free life to 80 or more years of age. If you tick only 60, you may only live disease-free until the age of 60, and so on. Obviously, some recommendations are more important than others so the overall mix will influence the result. Compare notes with other members of your family and your friends to see who has the most ticks. Then work through the list again and decide what additional ones you believe you can introduce into your life relatively easily, and start working on those. As you progress, you can set new targets and gradually increase the number of ticks. If you already have a debilitating disease you can probably improve your health significantly, even if you cannot eliminate the disease, by following the recommendations in this book.
If you decide that you are not going to follow the advice supplied here, then do not complain to anyone when you become debilitated. It is most likely your own fault and you are asking to suffer the consequences. Some older people complain to all and sundry about the state of their health, but what is happening is the result of things they have done to their own bodies over the years (maybe unwittingly), not something that has hit them out of the blue without warning.
SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
- I’m a fatalist. If it is going to happen it will happen.
Statistically, a high cholesterol reading indicates that the propensity for you to have a heart attack is higher, but the solution is to fix the problem rather than trying to reduce the cholesterol artificially with drugs, thereby stopping it from doing its job. Another concern is that the connection between a low cholesterol reading and other diseases has not been widely publicised. A low cholesterol reading means that your propensity to contract diseases such as cancer, leukaemia, become depressed, commit suicide, or suffer from chemical sensitivity. is much greater. The conclusion therefore is that there is an optimum cholesterol reading where the death rate from all causes is minimized. This optimum figure for total cholesterol is about 5.2 (Australia) or 200 mg/dl (USA). Whatever your reading is, prescription drugs do not fix whatever is causing the problem and may do more harm than
This is NOT TRUE. Someone up there does not all of a sudden decide that it is your turn to cop a disease and zap you without warning, takes many years of abuse to overcome your body’s natural defence mechanisms and cause disease. In other words you have to work really hard at giving yourself a chronic degenerative disease, and many of us do exactly that. Free radicals are the triggers that set off practically all chronic degenerative diseases. If you eliminate the free radicals, take action to prevent acidity (that is, keep your pH neutral), give the cells of your body the nutrients they need, limit addictive foods and behaviours that damage the body, and minimize the toxins entering your body, then the chance of ever suffering any of these debilitating diseases is greatly reduced. When the time comes, your heart will stop in old age, but you can enjoy full health until then if you so choose. - When I get sick the doctor will cure me.
This is NOT TRUE. Healing comes from within. You are born with the power to heal. It is your birthright, ready to go to work whenever changing conditions create a demand for it. Most doctors trained in western medicine have the best of intentions and some do give advice on natural ways of overcoming illnesses, but they have received little training in nutrition and are heavily influenced by the mass media and the lobbying of drug companies. Many seem to pay lip service to the concept of preventative medicine without really understanding what it means, and their professional organisations wage constant and often unfair wars against other therapeutic systems, regarding them as competition rather than intellectual challenges.
Doctors are trained to diagnose a disease and decide what drugs to prescribe to alleviate the adverse symptoms of it. This process is known as the ‘Disease Model’. For example, if your arteries have
been narrowed by plaque then your blood pressure will rise and this may lead to a heart attack. Doctors can prescribe drugs that do one of two things. Either they artificially expand the size of the arteries, or they thin the blood to make it flow through more easily. Either way you need to take the drugs they prescribe for the rest of your life and probably keep increasing the dosage, as the arteries will continue to narrow if you keep on doing what you have always been doing When the blockage becomes serious enough, surgeons will operate and give you a heart bypass, which necessitates the removal of a vein from your leg and insertion into your chest to act as a bypass of the blocked section of artery. None of these methods removes the plaque from your arteries, which would solve the problem without surgery. Most prescription drugs are foreign to the human body and have side effects that can damage it. At the very least they are giving your liver and kidneys an additional workload as they try to eliminate these additional ‘toxins’ from your body.
Your body has an amazing ability to heal itself, given the right environment, and you can learn how to dean the plaque out of your arteries yourself without medical intervention. This process is known as the ‘Health Model’. Very simply, the Health Model measures and rectifies the six possible defects that between them result in all chronic degenerative disease. They are acid/alkali (pH) imbalance, anaerobic metabolism (lack of oxygen), free calcium excess (too much free calcium), chronic inflammation, connective tissue breakdown (physical damage to cells),

- It is genetic. My parents had that disease so I will probablyget it.
This is NOT necessarily TRUE. You do not have to develop the same problem. We all have a weakest link somewhere in our bodies and it is that weakest link that will probably collapse first if we do not take care of ourselves. It is quite likely that a particular weakest link does run in your family. It is also possible that dangerous heavy metals such as mercury and lead have been passed on to you in the wom But just because your parents ended up with a particular disease d not mean you must end up with it too. 4. My cholesterol is too high.
For most of the population this is NOT TRUE. Practically no one had heard of cholesterol before the 1970s but since then a multi-billion dollar industry has grown up around the marketing of low or no cholesterol products and anti-cholesterol drugs. It is a well-established myth that cholesterol is an undesirable component of body and diet and it should be artificially lowered by taking drugs. The body uses cholesterol to repair and protect. It is manufactured in our bodies and is essential for a healthy immune system. A high total cholesterol reading may indicate that there is inflammation in the arteries and the cholesterol is trying to protect the affected areas. Artificially lowering the cholesterol level with drugs does not solve the problem that is causing the inflammation and may do more harm than good.
Statistically, a high cholesterol reading indicates that the propensity for you to have a heart attack is higher, but the solution is to fix the problem rather than trying to reduce the cholesterol artificially with drugs, thereby stopping it from doing its job. Another concem is that the connection between a low cholesterol reading and other diseases has not been widely publicised. A low cholesterol reading means that your propensity to contract diseases such as cancer, leukaemia, become depressed, commit suicide, or suffer from chemical sensitivity, is much greater. The conclusion therefore is that there is an optima cholesterol reading where the death rate from all causes is minimized. This optimum figure for total cholesterol is about 5.2 (Australia 200 mg/dl (USA). Whatever your reading is, prescription drugs do not fix whatever is causing the problem and may do more harm than good. Recent studies have shown an increase in cancer rates among those taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. These drugs affect the biosynthesis of Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10). This is needed by the heart to produce energy so a CoQ-10 supplement, which is a recommended supplement for everyone in general, is essential for anyone who does take these drugs.

We hear a lot about the importance of having a high HDL (the ‘good’ cholesterol) and a low LDL (the ‘bad’ cholesterol). Recent research has shown that a raised LDL reading corresponds with increased plaque in the arteries if the LDL is being oxidised, so if you are getting plenty of antioxidants in your diet, plaque is much less likely to form. Meanwhile the HDL is doing its job and reducing the plaque. If your cholesterol reading is significantly less than 5.2 (Australia) or 200 mg/dl (USA) then you should be trying to increase it, not reduce it. The food and drug companies do not want to hear this of course and continue to push the line that everyone should be trying to reduce their cholesterol no matter what the reading is.
Furthermore, there are measures other than cholesterol that may provide a better indication of your propensity to have a heart attack. These are homocystine and Lipoprotein (a), commonly called Lp(a). Excess homocystine in the blood can cause chemical reactions that tend to make low density lipoproteins (LDL) adhere to tissue, s homocystine can cause LDL to build up in the arteries. Lp(a) is a ten- fold greater risk factor than total cholesterol. High levels in adults are that reduce it. It can be reduced nutritionally with large doses of drags almost always a sign of inadequate exercise and there are no Vitamin C. If your doctor orders blood tests for cholesterol, ask for the homocystine and Lp(a) to be tested as well, and always ask for a copy of the results.
All this indicates that the commercial anti-cholesterol campaign consumption may be somewhat misguided and overdone. It has become a huge moneymaking industry and many health professionals have been caught up in the hype themselves, heavily influenced by the drug companies who do everything they can to increase the of drugs in the community, even paying sales bonuses to prescribers.

- I’m overweight and have tried everything, but nothing works.
This is NOT TRUE. ‘Fad diets’ will commonly not work, as any weight you lose will soon be put back on. A genuine alteration to your eating and lifestyle habits will work. It is not necessarily the amount of fat you eat that makes you fat. Your body needs a certain amount of fat in your diet, including saturated fat. The only fats you need to avoid totally are trans-fats, a major source of which are deep- fried foods. The low protein, low fat, high carbohydrate diets that became popular in the 1980s enabled people to lose weight but were not good for long-term health. Ross Horne has written extensively on the problems associated with the Pritikin diet, for example.
It is now apparent that those carbohydrates which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream are the biggest weight-gain culprits. It is not the quantity of food you eat that is the problem. You can eat as
much as you like, within reason, provided you minimise the amount of these carbohydrates. Exercise is essential to burn calories, but no amount of exercise will bring about weight loss if you are consuming excessive quantities of these carbohydrates. In 1952, Gaylord Hauser wrote, “Obesity has nothing to do with overeating. It is a carbohydrate intolerant disease’. He was right then and is right now. It is important to drink plenty of water, one side effect being that this will reduce the appetite for carbohydrates. High quality nutritional supplements may also reduce your appetite for carbohydrates as your body will not then be craving the additional vitamins and minerals that it is lacking.

- I eat healthy. I don’t need to take nutritional supplements.
This is NOT TRUE for nearly everyone on a modern western diet. Research has shown that only a very small percentage of people in western countries receive all the nutrients from food that the cells of their bodies need in order to avoid all chronic degenerative diseases. However, if you follow the recommendations in this book you stand a chance of doing so, after you have first undone some of the past damage.

- I’m here for a good time, not a long time.
People who say this are only fooling themselves. They maintain that they are going to enjoy the pleasures of life and have a good time while they can, not caring if they die earlier than need otherwise be the case. Although some exaggerate how much damage they are doing, many do seriously damage their bodies. What commonly happens to these people is that they suffer a debilitating disease somewhere between the ages of 30 and 60, live on prescription drugs for the rest
of their lives in pain, are restricted in what they can do, and s many years as an invalid in a nursing home before they finally fade away and die. Western medicine is good at keeping such individual alive for longer and longer periods but they have little, if any, quality of life. Some take their own lives before that happens. spend
People who look after their bodies develop more self-satisfaction than the good-time people who commit slow suicide, as they know that they will be able to wake up in the morning at 70 or more years of age, fit and healthy, taking no medication, and wondering what exciting things are going to happen in their lives that day. You can be in that category if you follow the recommendations in this book. Most people do not need the assistance of any drugs to achieve that level of happiness and satisfaction. You can achieve genuine happiness more easily without the involvement of drugs. The cells of your body do not need drugs in order to survive and thrive; on the contrary, most drugs are toxic to your body’s cells. In any event they only suppress symptoms, they do not cure the problem.
Millions of children in western countries miss out on the opportunity of knowing their grandparents and great grandparents because of the premature death or debilitation of so many middle aged people. As people age, they acquire knowledge, and more importantly wisdom. Wisdom would serve our society well. In today’s world, it is needed more than ever for humanity to survive.
- My friends do it, so to be ‘cool’ I need to do it also.
This is NOT TRUE. This applies mainly to the younger people in the community but older ones sometimes fall into the same trap. There are many things you can do to your body that will damage it and shorten your life span. By doing these things, you are committing slow suicide, becoming a future burden on your country’s health system and setting yourself up for a miserable last 20 years of your life confined to a nursing home.
Following the mob when you know something is not good for you is a sure sign of a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence. Learn to say “No!” and show that you are one of those individuals who want to make something of yourself, and that you know what you want in
life. Your self-respect and morale will emerge unscathed and you will quickly earn the respect of your peers.
- Anyone who comes up with a cure for cancer (or any other disease) that does not use patented drugs must be a charlatan and should be closed down and banished from the civilised world.
This is NOT TRUE. It is relatively easy to prevent cancer and other diseases if you follow the principles outlined in this book. People who have cancer often go into remission for all sorts of reasons, which individuals in the medical profession commonly do not feel inclined to investigate. Many people have come up with methods of treating cancer and other diseases that warrant consideration, and millions of people attest to the success of therapies other than the cut, burn, poison procedures promoted under the banner of western medicine. That is not to say that there are not charlatans out there, and it behoves everyone to be on the lookout for them.
